Review by Noel Ignatiev, author of How the Irish Became White

“It is strange yet predictable that this moderate and judicious book that defers to conventional Jewish sensibilities will be denounced as anti-Semitic for daring to consider for all of historic Palestine what has long been commonplace in every modern country─not a ‘Jewish’ or an ‘Arab’ state, but a democratic state in which every person has one vote, all groups enjoy cultural freedom, and religion is a private matter.”—Noel Ignatiev, author of How the Irish Became White.

Review by Joel Kovel, author of Overcoming Zionism

“Professor Constance Hilliard adds an expert and compassionate voice to the gathering chorus calling for a fundamental rethinking of the project of the Jewish state. This is an important contribution to one of the great debates of our time.”—Joel Kovel, author of Overcoming Zionism: Creating a Single Democratic State in Israel/Palestine “

Review by Noam Chomsky, MIT Institute Professor & Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus)

“Constance Hilliard raises very critical issues, and whether one agrees with her conclusions or not, there is much to ponder in her analysis. Her leading theme seems to me very persuasive. For some years, Israel has chosen a course that is likely to lead to disaster, for itself and the region—not to speak of the Palestinians—and unless those who call themselves ‘supporters of Israel’ are willing to face these moral and geopolitical realities, they may in reality be supporters of Israel’s moral degeneration and ultimate destruction.”—Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor and professor of linguistics (emeritus), Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Hilliard, Constance. Does Israel have a future?: the case for a post-Zionist state. Potomac Books, 2009. 183p bibl index afp; ISBN 9781597972345, $24.50. Reviewed in 2010may CHOICE.

Underlying her provocative title is Hilliard's deep concern for the victims of Western anti-Semitism "trapped" in Israel, a country promoted by the US and its allies because they were unwilling to admit adequate numbers of Jewish refugees into their respective countries before, during, or after the Holocaust. As hopes fade for a just peace between an Israeli and a Palestinian state, Hilliard urges the creation of a post-Zionist state along lines once advocated by Albert Einstein, Martin Buber, Hannah Arendt, and many other liberal Jewish intellectuals. Based largely on Israeli and other Jewish sources, Hilliard (Univ. of North Texas) portrays Israel as an economically viable society on the verge of emotional collapse, suffering post-traumatic stress disorder caused by Palestinian suicide bombings and other Arab attacks brought on by its aggressive expansion and colonization policies. Much of its educated elite are leaving the country, and Palestinians will soon outnumber Jews in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank. This book is rich, timely, and disturbing reading, presenting information about "apocalypse fever" and "magical thinking" in Israel that deserves greater publicity in the US. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readership levels. -- C. M. Henry, University of Texas at Austin
